Off the beaten track: Hidden gems in Cornwall

From secret coves to secluded beauty spots, Cornwall is home to a treasure trove of hidden places just waiting to be discovered. Whether you're seeking the quietude of untouched sandy shores, look to immerse yourself in stories of fairy tale and folklore or bathe in the inviting waters of tidal pools, there are a host of hidden gems and secret things to do in Cornwall.

Nanjizal

Nestled on the southwest coast of Cornwall, Nanjizal, also known as Mill Bay, is a haven for those looking to uncover breath-taking scenes, rugged beauty and shores dusted in golden sand. The beach itself is ever changing, with mother nature guiding the scene set in the bay after each tumultuous storm. Whether you’re met with banks of golden sand, or enchanting rocky vistas, this hidden gem is well worth visiting for unrivalled seclusion. At the far side of the beach sits a magnificent sea cave comprising of dramatic rocky arches, the “Song of the Sea”, which promises a magnificent backdrop whilst swimming in the inviting turquoise waters which are akin to a tropical paradise.

There is no direct access to Nanjizal, but park your car at Land’s End and journey along the mile-long coast path, which promises beautiful views as you make your way to this hidden gem. Additional parking can be found nearby at Porthgwarra and Polgigga. Please note that access to the beach can be challenging and isn’t recommended for those with limited mobility. There are also no lifeguards at this beach.



Museum of Witchcraft and Magic 

Home to the largest collection of witching and folk magic artefacts in the world, the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic opened in Boscastle in 1960. From its whitewashed façade, this independent museum may appear small in size, but inside, a portal of enchantment awaits, with over 4000 objects within their collection, plus over 7000 books and manuscripts on witchcraft. Delve into the archives of witchcraft throughout history into the present day.

 

Chapel Pool

Tucked beneath the cliffs of Polperro, Chapel Pool is a south-facing tidal pool which is basked in sunlight, promising temperate bathing waters in the most delightful setting – a dream during the summer months. Guided by the tide, it’s best accessed at mid to low tide, with a shallow section for paddling and a deeper section of pool for submerging in the refreshing water. Please note, the tide comes in quickly over the tidal pool, so do familiarise yourself with the tide times in this area. Nearby parking can be found within the village of Polperro.

 

Tintagel Castle 

Immerse yourself in a world of myth and legend at this hidden gem on the north coast of Cornwall, a spectacular historic site where the story of King Arthur began. Tintagel Castle is steeped in history, boasting dramatic views from every angle. Walk across the iconic bridge, which was replaced in 2015 after the original footbridge had vanished between the 15th and 16th century, before exploring the enchanting remains of the Great Hall, dating back to the 13th century. This rugged open-air attraction lures visitors from across the world, inspiring writers, artists and historians alike. St Nectan’s Glen

Both an area of outstanding natural beauty and Site of Special Scientific Interest, Cornwall’s hidden gem St Nectan’s Glen draws attention from visitors across the world, and for good reason. Immersed in natural beauty, with its enchanting woodland walk inspiring tales of Cornish piskies and fairies, and stunning waterfalls and natural pools a place of legend. A pay and display car park can be found a 30-minute walk away, with opening times and further parking details available here. Due to its location and uneven terrain, wheelchair and pushchair access is not recommended.
