With ever-increasing research coming out about the benefits of cold-water swimming, more and more of us are braving the plunge to boost our immune systems, clear our minds and get that amazing rush of endorphins.

But what about those of us who aren’t really confident in the sea? Well, that’s where Cornwall’s best sea pools come in. Cut off from the open water, these amazing tidal pools create the perfect saltwater havens to enjoy invigorating dips, safe from intimidating waves and dangerous rips but with all the natural, feel-good benefits!

Bude Sea Pool

Located at the bottom of Summerleaze Beach cliffs, Bude’s stunning tidal pool is Cornwall’s largest sea pool and one that has long been a favourite of locals and visitors alike. A semi-natural pool expanded in the 1930s by the English engineer Captain Henry Round (a close associate of Guglielmo Marconi), it measures almost 100 meters in length and 50 meters wide – never really feeling crowded thanks to its size. A haven for safe bathing, its turquoise waters can be enjoyed for free throughout the year. Who’s in?

Chapel Rock Tidal Pool, Perranporth

Look out for the tell-tale flag of St Piran to lead you towards this hidden gem. Taking pride of place on the southern side of Chapel Rock, this small sea pool is often overlooked by unsuspecting beachgoers. Refreshed with each high tide and warmed by the heat of the sun during the day, it is a beautiful place to take a dip and listen to the faraway roar of the Atlantic Ocean. Popular in summer with local children, some of the best times to visit this pool are early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Jubilee Pool

2,000 years after the Romans created their geothermal baths, the UK’s first geothermal lido was opened. The first and only one of its kind in the UK, Penzance’s Jubilee Pool is perfect for those looking to gently introduce themselves to cold-water swimming or to simply enjoy being out in the elements. Warmed by a geothermal well 410meters beneath the earth’s crust (the same height as one and a half Eiffel Towers), bathers can enjoy a truly unique sea pool experience.

Porthtowan Tidal Pool

Nestled in a rocky gully at the foot of the cliffs to the north of Porthtowan beach, this sea pool is another that can be easily missed. Only accessible at low tide, its sheltered position and generous size makes it a great option for families with children and for those who are still building their confidence in the water. A saltwater idyll throughout the year, this Cornish seal pool is particularly lovely in summer when you can relax on its sun-baked brow and watch the surfers catching barrels at sea.

Treyarnon Bay Rock Pool

Located along the north coast of Cornwall, Treyarnon Bay is a stunning beach with plenty of appeal. Making it even more alluring, it is also home to one of the county’s largest natural sea pools. Measuring around 12 meters across and over 2 meters deep in some places, bathers of all ages will love gliding through its crystal-clear waters, soaking up the sun and savouring the views. If you’re planning a winter dip, just remember to bring a flask of tea and a hot-water bottle with you!

The Tidal Baths, Portreath

Thought to have been engineered by a group of inventive (and perhaps a little trigger happy) locals who used dynamite to blow a hole in a rocky outcrop, Portreath’s sea pools can be found on the far right of the beach against the harbour wall. Surrounded by six smaller, bath-like pools that were sculpted in the 19th century for a local Lady, bathers will have their pick of sea pools to indulge in an open-air plunge and revive the senses with the revitalising wash of seawater and salty air.
