Best activities in Shropshire for adventurers
5th July 2021
Whether it be by water, land or sky, the opportunities for action and adventure in Shropshire are endless. Perfect for whirlwind short breaks and activity-packed weeks away in a Boutique Hideaway, you can enjoy a whole range of brilliant things to do to test your daring and boost your spirit.
Hike Shropshire’s Highest Peak
With its commanding views over the surrounding countryside, Shropshire’s Brown Clee Hill is naturally a popular choice for walks. At over 1,700ft above sea level, you won’t find bigger hills eastward until you reach the Urals in Russia! While there are lots of great trails to follow, there is a 7-mile circular offshoot of the Shropshire Way here that we definitely recommend, leading you past Iron Age forts, time-forgotten villages and abandoned industrial relics.
Paddle the Severn
If you are looking for a novel way to explore the River Severn in Shropshire, why not hire a paddleboard, canoe or kayak and paddle along the river? If you’re less experienced on the water, you can also join an organised boat trip for guided discovery. The longest river in Great Britain, there are all sorts of amazing routes you can take; however, the Shrewsbury river loop around ‘the Isle’ is a particularly nice option and not too demanding.
Zipline
Soar through the air on the second longest zipline in England with the Great Escape Adventure Company. An exhilarating activity for adventurers of all ages, the park’s 1,700ft-long ‘Black Hawk’ zipline will take you on a thrilling ride above some of the county’s most breath-taking scenery. A real treat for adrenaline junkies, this high-flyer begins with a take-off 1,450ft above sea level and rewards the brave with incredible panoramic views.
Wild Swim
If you are into your wild swimming, then Shropshire will appeal to you. While you can swim in certain locations along the River Teme and in Alderford Lake, one of the best places has to be the National Trust-run Carding Mill Valley Reservoir. Here, you can swim at the old reservoir in Carding Mill Valley where there are helpful notices about safe recreational swimming. What’s more, there’s also an onsite café where you can warm up afterwards with tea and cake.
Mountain Bike
With both waymarked and unofficial routes crisscrossing the county, bikers of all experience will have a wonderful time exploring Shropshire on wheels. One of the best activities in Shropshire for adventurers, mountain bikers in particular will love blasting along the county’s dedicated biking trails, including the various trails at Eastridge Woods in Habberley and Hopton Woods near Hopton Castle. The latter, Hopton Woods, is especially appealing for seasoned bikers with a variety grades.
